Eye Candy

Along with the MCM furnishings and decor I enjoy, I also like what I characterize as "Eye Candy".....call it what you will, but I love to look at old photos. Particularly period pieces that show old cars, boats, trains, planes, buildings, or bridges that evoke a different era. There is something about looking at these older images that brings a certain enjoyment. I have found this site called Shorpy that publishes a ton old pictures that they find in the National Archives and other sources. I find that these photos are exceedingly fascinating. WARNING! WARNING! Wil Robinson, you can waste a lot of time on this site! Here's some examples of the many images they have:

Speaking of time wasters, I also love motorsport and have found a site that publishes fabulous shots taken of the WRC (World Rally Championship) Series Cars. These drivers have the largest you know whats in the world..... How these drivers get their cars and trucks to do some of these acrobatics shown, and live to tell about it, in the following photos is beyond explanation!

    Are those really tires tracks?

   Cheers!

Death and Grandpa's Stuff

When I die, I don't want to be buried. Take note kids, I want to be cremated with all of my worldly possessions. I picture a huge funeral pyre stacked 2 stories high with me being laid out on top. Then the ashes will need to be spread to the wind from a car traveling at least in the 3 digit stratosphere. I guess being dropped from a plane would also qualify. I'm not sure what the point of this is, but I just had to get it out there. I suppose it's due to the variety of items I've bought from other people's grandparents......see below.

This is a 1936 Mickey Mouse movie with Donald Duck that is called Trained Seals on 16mm film. That's right, 16mm film, not tape, not CD, not DVD. You need a big honking movie projector to watch this cartoon. It came on a 7" reel that equates to around 400' of film and runs for around 12-13 minutes. Boy have we come far with our Net Flix and Red Box DVD rentals!

Next is a step up in technology..yes that's right, we go from 16mm to Super 8! Conquest of the Planet of the Apes on Super 8! What a Blockbuster! Wish I had a Super 8 player right now.

Some of you might be asking, what the hell is a slide rule? Well this one doesn't actually slide, it rotates. Anyway, to answer your question, if you were born before we went to the Moon, you know the answer, but if were born after, than this is what people used before hand held calculators. Yes, people actually did complicated calculations prior to electronic calculators. Man got to the Moon using a slide rule as well as designing some of the most classic aircraft ever...P-51 Mustang, P-38 Lightning, of course the SR-71 Blackbird.

This post would not be complete without a pair of Grandpa's shoes. Johnston and Murphy leather Chukkas in bone! According to AARP, some of the most comfortable shoes ever devised! These are 10W, and if you need them they are for sale right here!

Lastly, I give you Grandpa!
