MCM Vintage Salterini Lawn Furniture

Headed out early today to see a MCM dresser our favorite Estate Company was holding for us. Sadly, it was not the one we wanted. We then headed over to an Estate Sale in the Barcroft area of Northern Virginia, a well known MCM enclave of homes. They had advertised a cute 50's style dinette set we were hoping might replace our 80's set. It was still available when we got there, but found it to be a poorly made reproduction made in Taiwan! Needless to say, we passed on this one. One thing about Estate Sales is, you sometimes find unexpected treasures and we did. No sooner were we done dissing the dinette set, when my better half spotted a pair of the most comfortable lawn chairs we've ever had. This was a pair of John Salterini Clam Shell chairs of which we already have 2. We snapped these babies up fast! Rustoleum here we come.....

One is a Cantilevered Spring Rocking Chair. The other was part of a table and chair set. We'll keep looking to round out either set.....

John B. Salterini emigrated from Italy to the United States in the early 1920s and began producing quality outdoor furniture from his studio in Brooklyn, New York, from 1928 to 1953. Wrought-iron furniture had been produced for hundreds of years, however, the practice seemed to be dying out in in the first-half of the twentieth century.

Salterini is widely credited as being responsible for the resurgence in wrought-iron garden furniture and his designs resembled the popular styles of this period, including Gothic Revival and Art Deco.

Salterini produced a wide range of garden furniture, ranging from the traditional tables and chairs to more exotic pieces, including chaise lounges, ottomans and settees that had arching patterns in the back to hold large canopies.
